Independent Study - Process for Earning Credits toward ABE Certificate of Performance Renewal

Description

Independent study is a process by which practitioners investigate instructional issues of a particular concern, collect information, and report on their processes and results. Independent Study that is pre-approved by the applicant’s program and by Nevada’s Leadership Team may be eligible for credit toward ABE Certificate of Performance renewal. Credits range from 0.25 to 2.0, depending on scope.

Examples

  • Classroom research: Try a new research-based strategy or teaching method in classroom. Compare outcomes to control group (if appropriate). Provide report that includes review of literature, process, findings, expected versus actual results, and recommendations.
  • Literature review on a topic: Write report and submit report suitable for publishing to Nevada’s adult education community.

Process

  • All independent study projects must be pre-approved in order to receive credit.
  • Applicant develops proposal and confirms feasibility with supervisor. Applicant submits proposal to Sharyn Yanoshak.
  • Leadership Team reviews and (if project is approved) specifies credits allowed, makes suggestions, provides technical assistance as requested and/or appropriate.
  • When project is completed, applicant submits report electronically to  Sharyn Yanoshak, who will send applicant Certificate of Accomplishment which can be used toward renewal of the ABE Certificate of Performance.

Proposal must include:

  1. What are you going to do? (Purpose and objectives)
  2. What do you expect to happen? (Results, outcomes, etc.) or what do you expect to learn?
  3. How will you measure results (if apropos)?
  4. How will you report your findings?
  5. Estimated hours to complete
  6. Target date for completion
  7. Program for which you work and your phone number
