Overview

What It Is

Unlike traditional teacher certification systems that recognize an educator's readiness to teach, Nevada's outcome-based Certificate of Performance recognizes proven competence and performance in the ABE/ESL classroom or tutoring environment.

Nevada's Adult Basic Educator's Certificate of Performance is based on demonstrated proficiency in achieving outcomes in support of the Nevada State Plan and/or individual federally funded program grant objectives.
Participation is voluntary

Purpose

  • To recognize and honor the competence and performance of ABE/ESL instructors and tutors by providing them "proof" of proficiency.
  • To ensure instructor/tutor awareness of program, state, and federal goals.
  • To provide stakeholders evidence of Nevada’s commitment to quality adult education.

Features

Fair, objective, and voluntary

Nevada’s Certificate of Performance is based on outcome data collected and reported to the state and federal Departments of Education. Any adult educator who works in an established ABE/ESL program in Nevada is eligible to apply.

Uncomplicated and inexpensive

For the Initial Certificate of Performance, applicants need only provide evidence to support their outcomes; this evidence is available through standard program reports. For certificate renewal, applicants additionally supply readily available evidence of workshop completion (such as Certificate of Completion, Conference Evaluation, etc.).

Meaningful to stakeholders

There is a trend at the federal level, as well as in some states, to require that adult educators be certified or credentialed.

Unique

Nevada is presently the only state offering an Adult Basic Educator’s Certificate of Performance based on student outcomes!
